Defeat at Everton on Saturday left the Hoops 10 points from safety and the manager hinted his players have lacked the mental qualities required for a relegation battle.
"You say we have talented players but are they that talented? I don’t know really," he told reporters.
"You have some experienced players but what you need is a good group of characters, a good group of people together and you have not got any problems when you have that."

"It’s not a case of players wanting to leave suddenly," Redknapp continued.
"I hear that all the time that if they get relegated they want to go because they don’t want to play in the Championship.
"But if they played better they would not be in the Championship so that’s a load of cobblers."
Chairman Tony Fernandes has previously insisted the club’s finances are under control, but poor results this season mean it could prove hard to attract interest in players believed to be on high wages and QPR may struggle to relieve the resulting financial burden should they drop into the Championship.
"Players won’t go," Redknapp continued. "How are you going to get rid of them? They all have contracts. I wish you could say players would leave but it isn’t going to happen.
"Who is going to pay them what they’re earning here? It’s going to be hard to shift them."
