Phil Jagielka: Everton won't make same mistakes as Liverpool at Oldham

The Toffees defender insists that David Moyes will never allow his side to be outfought as he warns against complacency ahead of their FA Cup fifth-round tie at Boundary Park

Phil Jagielka has reassured Everton fans ahead of their meeting with Oldham in the fifth round of the FA Cup that they will not be repeating the mistakes made by Liverpool.

The League One side famously dumped the Toffees' Merseyside rivals out of the competition in the fourth round but the England international is determined to avoid the same fate.

The defender saw the Reds' demise as being through a lack of fight but is certain that David Moyes will not allow such a situation to occur with his men.

"Being beaten through being outfought is something I don't think the manager of this club would ever let happen - and I would put my mortgage on it!" Jagielka told the Daily Mirror.

"I’d put the mortgage on the fact we will not be knocked over because no-one wanted to turn up. The manager takes his time picking players to come to this club and that is one of the main reasons he goes for who he does.

"We are going there to be shot at but the players have been in and around the squad for long enough now to know what is expected of them."

Moyes could rest players for the trip to managerless Oldham as Everton focus on a late charge for Champions League qualification but Jagielka reckons that the team will show the same fight whoever lines up.

15/4 Everton are 15/4 with BetVictor to be drawing with Oldham at half-time but win by full-time
"The manager put out his strongest team at Cheltenham. We could have hid behind putting other people in and taking the pressure off if there was a bad result," he added.

Everton have come close to claiming silverware in recent years under Moyes and the centre-back revealed that the players are just as desperate as their supporters for that elusive trophy.

"The manager and the players, we all want to win something," Jagielka continued. "We have been to semi-finals and finals since I have been here over the last five years and we're desperate to get to another one and possibly go one step further.

"The last thing the manager and players want is to be left with a load of ifs and buts. The boys are desperate because we have been to Wembley a few times. The fans go ridiculous, half the stadium is blue, and they are brilliant occasions."
