The legendary manager reveals his intention to continue at the helm at Old Trafford for longer than 26 years after the club unveiled a statue of him outside the stadium on Friday

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says that he has no plans to retire just yet..

The legendary boss watched on as United unveiled a statue of him outside Old Trafford on Friday in order to honour his remarkable 26 years of service to the Red Devils.

The Scot questioned whether the club should have waited until he retired to erect a monument in his name but went on to reveal that stepping down is not on his agenda any time soon.

"You feel a bit vain when you realise you're looking at yourself but it's fantastic, what a fantastic piece of work," he told the Daily Mail of the statue.

"The difference is that it's happened when I'm still the manager, so it makes it more difficult.

"My wife found it hard to understand because normally these things are done after you've passed away or when you've left the club.

"But I'm here and I don't intend to be leaving soon. It's an honour and I'm so proud of it.

"I've had 26 years at the club so far and when the time comes and I decide to hang my boots at - who knows? - maybe 27 years, I think it will be a testimony to the work I've done at the club.

"And that's a fantastic respect to be paid to me."
