The England international has yet to notch a Premier League goal this season and was deployed in a deeper midfield role during Sunday's victory against Newcastle

Wayne Rooney has insisted that he is unconcerned by his barren run in front of goal, as long as Manchester United keep on winning.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men defeated Newcastle 3-0 on Sunday, with two goals from corners in the first half followed by a long-range effort from Tom Cleverley after the break.

And, after the former Everton attacker was deployed in a deeper midfield role on Sunday, he was keen to underline his commitment to doing a job for the team.

"You’re involved in the game throughout and I’m not one who won’t put the work in," he told Sky Sports. "I’ll put the work in and try and give my best for the team, and that’s all I can do.

"[I'm] not at all [concerned by not scoring], as long as we keep winning. We’ve got players who can score goals for us as well as myself.

"I’m not concerned; if it comes, it comes, but if not, as long as we’re winning then I’m not really concerned about that."

The Croxteth-born forward went on to hail his side's defensive efforts in posting victory against Alan Pardew's side.

"The first six games of the season we haven’t defended well enough and that’s not just the back four, it’s the whole team. I think today we were brilliant; they’re a big physical team," he added.

"We knew we had to defend our box really well and we managed to do that and score three goals. It was a focused performance today and we need to continue to do that for the rest of the season if we want to be successful."

Rooney's team-mate Cleverley, whose goal ensured a comfortable end to the game for the visitors, also expressed delight with the Red Devils' performance.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game and having the start we did was fantastic for us," he said.

"Not just the goals, we were playing really well and we hit them on the counter attack at times, and then I thought we really controlled the second half.

"Away from home any clean sheet is massive and with all the balls that Newcastle put in the box I thought the back four and the goalkeeper were fantastic for us today, and fully deserved the clean sheet."

Replays appeared to show the midfielder was aiming to play the ball into the path of Robin van Persie rather than shooting before his goal, but he insisted his intention was to score.

"Yeah, I meant to put it in that far corner. I’ve looked to the far corner, whether it’s a good cross or, obviously it’s a good finish, so luckily it’s found the net," he added.
