The Everton defender believes that the 1-1 home result against Ukraine can be built upon and that the national team are still on course to qualify for World Cup 2014 in Brazil

England defender Phil Jagielka believes that the team can build on their 1-1 draw with Ukraine and will still automatically qualify for the World Cup 2014.

The visitors nearly pulled off a shock win but the Three Lions came away with a point when a late Frank Lampard penalty snatched a vital point.

The Everton player, who replaced the sidelined John Terry in the starting line-up, admitted that the performance wasn’t the best from Roy Hodgson's side, but says the team will be fine as long as they improve from their first two games.

"It's probably the right word to use: 'Okay'. No great shakes," Jagielka told reporters.

"We'd have loved to have had the full six points [from the first two games] but four points will do.

"As long as we continue building on it, we'll be fine. [It was] definitely one point gained.

"We look forward to the next game now and if we can make that seven then it's a progression and hopefully we'll finish top of the group.

"But if you look at the chances we created, two or three pretty clear-cut ones in the first half and a couple more in the second - hitting the post and stuff - as much as the performance wasn't amazing, we still showed glimpses of being able to create the chances.

"If we'd taken them, especially earlier on, we'd have been in control of the game."

England had a Jermain Defoe goal disallowed as referee Cuneyt Cakir frequently blew his whistle against the home side to frustrate the Wembley faithful, and Jagielka admitted to being frustrated by the official's performance, but conceded that there isn't much you can do about it.

"We're winning the ball and the ref's either booking us or giving free kicks," Jagielka added. "So, a little bit frustrating but there's not much we can do about that.

"Thankfully, we managed to keep plugging away and get the penalty. Frank was calm as you like, finished it off, and a draw's not a bad result at the end."
