The names of the five players selected to vie for the 2012 BBC African Footballer of the Year award have been announced

A five-man shortlist for the 2012 BBC African Footballer of the Year award was published on Thursday by the broadcaster, including 2009 winner Didier Drogba of Cote D’Ivoire.

Newcastle United forward Demba Ba from Senegal, Moroccan Younes Belhanda of French Ligue 1 champions Montpellier, captain of African champions Zambia Christopher Katongo and reigning African Footballer of the Year Ivorian Yaya Toure of Manchester City are the other four players on the list.

The winner will be announced on December 17 at the end of an online vote, according to the BBC.

Ghana international Andre Ayew won the 2011 edition.
