The former Tunisian champions have been thrown out of the competition by the governing body due to fans’ unruly behaviour during the game against their local rivals
Former Tunisian champions Etoile du Sahel have been thrown out of the Caf Champions League after the disciplinary committee of the competition found their fans guilty of pitch invasion, missile throwing and the release of fire crackers during their game against Esperance on August 19.
Esperance won the match 2-0 but were attacked by fans of Etoile in a closed game open only to the home fans.
In disqualifying Etoile, the disciplinary committee quoted Article 7 paragraph 6 of the rules governing the tournament: ‘If the referee is forced to stop the match before the end of the regular time because of invasion of the field or aggression against the visiting team, the host team shall be considered loser and shall be eliminated from the competition, without prejudice to the sanctions existing in the regulations.’
All of Etoile’s matches have now been cancelled and the table redrawn with Esperance and Nigeria’s Sunshine Stars both sharing six points on top of the log while Algeria’s ASO Chlef have no points.
Esperance and Sunshine Stars are set to take the semi-final places.
