But like any avid football followers, we at Goal.com are looking forward - not backward - to who could possibly try and step into Sir Alex's shoes.
As we exclusively revealed earlier on Wednesday, David Moyes is the man in line to replace the outgoing Manchester United manager, and his appointment could be announced as soon as possible.
The current Everton boss is said to be set on leaving Goodison Park after 11 years at the Toffees, with Old Trafford his next destination - although talk of a certain Jose Mourinho is just starting to circulate.
Is Moyes the right man to replace Sir Alex or are there better candidates out there? With no major trophies to his name and only one unsuccessful venture to the Champions League play-off round, is the 50-year-old experienced enough? Or are his Premier League achievements with Everton enough to say he has proved himself?
