Had little to do but was comfortable when called upon, saving Yossi Benayoun’s low shot well in the first half.
Got forward well from right-back and was competent in defence although he was rarely troubled by the Chelsea attackers.
Looked solid and untroubled in defence, preventing Chelsea’s attacking players from making any telling passes while providing the cross that forced Rusescu’s penalty.
A confident performance in partnership with Szukala in defence as the pair kept lone striker Fernando Torres quiet throughout.
An encouraging performance from the centre-back, who dealt well with the Chelsea aerial threat from set-pieces and was helpful in launching his side’s forward movements.
Looked handy from set-pieces and led his team well as they dealt with what could have been a potent Chelsea midfield.
An uncompromising performance from the midfielder, who was not afraid to be physical and dealt with Chelsea’s passing game well. Had some good moments in attack as well before being replaced late on.
Looked good on the left and had plenty of time on the ball but struggled to get the better of Branislav Ivanovic on many occasions.
Adrian Popa I
Had a comfortable game in the midfield and used his time on the ball well, launching much of Steaua’s attacking play.
Had a good game in the middle of the park, stifling Eden Hazard and showcasing a good range of passes, although blotted his copybook somewhat with a foul on John Terry for which he was booked. Eventually replaced by Prepelita.
Led the line alone with a good deal of success, causing the Chelsea defence plenty of problems. Buried his penalty well to give Steaua the lead after being held back in the box.
Had little to do, but would have been very disappointed to see Raul Rusescu’s penalty squirm under his body.
Handled Alexandru Chipciu well on the right of Chelsea’s defence but looked largely insipid in his forward play.
Defended well but did not come forward with his usual zest and vigour as the Blues struggled to attack with any real conviction.
Found defending difficult as he deputised for Ashley Cole, and was guilty of holding back Raul Rusescu to give away a penalty and earn a booking.
An uncompromising performance from the Blues skipper who tried to rally the troops but found little response from his team-mates.
J. Obi Mikel
Was almost completely anonymous in the centre of midfield as the game seemed to largely pass him by and found himself unable to contribute anything of note.
Another who struggled with his passing and ball retention, the Israeli looked short of match practice but did have a good shot pushed away by Steaua’s goalkeeper in the first half before he was replaced by Mata with just under half an hour left.
Had little impact on play and struggled to get forward in support of Torres. The Belgian lacked the vigour he showed as a substitute against Sparta Prague in the last round.
Had some flashes of inspiration but was guilty of not supporting lone striker Torres as much as he could have. Saw a number of his passes and crosses miss their intended targets.
Saw a number of his passes go astray as his usual accuracy deserted him, with his attempted long-balls to Torres being particularly unsuccessful.
Led the line alone and had some small flashes of inspiration, but found himself increasingly isolated with little or no support as the Steaua defenders kept him very quiet.
Came on for Rusescu with a couple of minutes left.
The utility man came on for the cautioned Pintilii midway through the second half and did well in shoring up the Steaua midfield.
Came on for Tanase late in the game but had too little time to make an impact.
