The Eagles saw off the Mambas challenge in their last Group A match to progress to the next round of Chan 2014

Mali came from behind to clinch a 2-1 victory over Mozambique in Group A last match at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday to qualify to the quarterfinals of the 2014 African Nations Championship in South Africa.

The Mambas were ahead by half time through an opener from Josemar, giving some consolation to his side, who had crashed out of the tournament coming into this game following their previous two losses to South Africa and Nigeria.

Mali dominated the early exchanges but goal actions from Adama Traore and Hamidou Sinayoko were wasteful.

After struggling to get a foothold in the game, the Mambas began to put together some meaningful interplay by the half hour mark, yielding in the opening goal when Josemar found himself unmarked at the back post in Mali area before blasting home his effort that hit the inside post and landing in the back net. That was seconds before the break.

The Eagles levelled moments after the break through Ibourahima Sidibe, who meandered through Mozambique defence to slot home his close range effort.

Mali controlled the rest of the session, with Keita and second half entrant Mamadou Sidibe coming close to upping the lead for their side but kept failing to find success.

It was late in stoppage time, 93rd minute, when the West Africans sealed their qualification to the knockout stage from the spot kick.

Mozambique’s Joao Mazive provoked the penalty while Idrissa Traore converted it for Mali to conclude the meeting on a 2-1 scoreline.
