The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon will strive to improve their standings in Group I of the Brazil 2014 World Cup qualifiers when they clash with the Hawks of Togo at the Amadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde on Saturday.

Fresh from an impressive Africa Cup of Nations campaign in South Africa, where they reached the second round, Togo will be hoping to increase the momentum to help them qualify for the global football fiesta for the second time after making their debut appearance in Germany 2006.

The game is everyone’s following the Indomitable Lions’ recent poor performances which saw them missing the last two Nations Cup tournaments.

Moreover, internal wrangling and impasses such as player revolts are still a dominant feature in the setup of the 1990 World Cup quarter-finalists which can affect them greatly once again. Coach Paul Akonno has called on the ‘rebel’ players of Samuel Eto'o, Alexander Song, Thomas Nkoulou and others for this all important clash which can make or unmake the Cameroonians.

His counterpart Didier Six of Togo is also likely to bank his hope on majority of the players who helped the country to go past the group stages of the Afcon for the first time namely skipper Emmanuel Adebayor, Dove Wome, Serghe Gakpe, Floyd and Jonathan Ayite and many others.

It will be interesting to see how the Cameroonian recuperating back four of Sebastian Bassong, Nicholas Nkoulou, Benoit Assou Ekotto and Jean Kana-Biyik deal with the counter-attacking play of the Togolese which has caused problems for so many sides on the continent.

The likes of Serge Akakpo, Dare Nibombe, Vincent Bossou and Djene Daonam will also have to be at their best to halt the predatory instinct of veteran Eto'o, Eric Chipo Moting of Mainz 05, and Sparta Praque's Leonard Kweuke.

One department of the game which is also going to be keenly contested is the middle where Song, Stephane Mbia Etounde, Joel Matip and Jean Makoun battle Alaixys Romao, Prince Kossi Segbefia, Sapol Mani and others for supremacy.
  • Cameroon and Togo have met four times with each side winning twice.
  • Both countries were in Group A during the qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with Togo beating Cameroon in Lome on March 28, 2009 whilst the Indomitable Lions also won the second-leg 3-1 at Yaounde on October 10, 2009.
  • Emmanuel Adebayor and Alexander Song all played for English Premiership side Arsenal.
  • Togolese reserve goalkeeper Cedric Mensah, defender Sene Mango and Cameroonian deputy skipper Nicholas Nkoulou all play for Marseille in the French Ligue 1.
  • Togo became the first country to qualify for the World Cup in 2006 when they had prior to that not even made it past the group stages of the Africa Cup of Nations.
