Andros Townsend will be looking to retain his starting place at Tottenham for their trip to Aston Villa on Sunday.

The 22-year-old, who signed a new four-year deal with the club on Friday, impressed in England's final two World Cup qualifiers against Montenegro and Poland and looks set to start for Andre Villas-Boas' side amid competition from Erik Lamela, Nacer Chadli and Aaron Lennon, who is poised to return from a foot injury.

Despite Townsend's form which saw him score on his debut for Roy Hodgson's side during the international break, Villa-Boas insists the winger could still be subject to squad rotation if his performances dip in quality.

"It's a question of what serves the team and who's performing better," said the Tottenham manager.

"Whenever someone is doing well they deserve to keep their place. [Townsend] knows he has tough competition for his place.

"Not just from Lamela and Lennon but [Gylfi] Sigurdsson and Chadli. He will continue to deliver, that's what we want."

Ahead of Tottenham's visit, Lambert will not need reminding of the need for Villa to end their inconsistent results at home.

Following the 3-2 win over Manchester City last time out on home soil, Villa have the opportunity to win back-to-back Premier League games at Villa Park for the first time since 2011.

Paul Lambert's men have also struggled defensively at home, having failed to keep a clean sheet in their previous 14 Premier League outings at Villa Park.

Tottenham travel to Villa without Danny Rose (toe) and Etienne Capoue (ankle), while Younes Kaboul remains a doubt with the muscle strain sustained in the Europa League tie against Anzhi Makhachkala on October 3.

Villa boss Lambert is hoping to have Christian Benteke available again. The striker has sat out Villa's last three games with a hip injury but was an unused substitute in Belgium's 1-1 draw with Wales on Tuesday evening.

Jores Okore (knee) and Charles N'Zogbia (Achilles) are long-term absentees for Villa.
