  Rarely seen in his own half which helped Zenit's attacking potency but the 30-year-old allowed Suarez to get one on one with Neto, which could have cost his side if the Liverpool striker finished his chances. Produced a fine ball across the box to set up Semak's goal.

  The Brazilian threatened in stages in the first half but also looked slightly off the pace and showed a rustiness in his first touch and movement, having not played a competitive fixture since December 10. The forward declined further in the second half until his superb long-range strike which Reina had no chance of getting near to.

  The Spaniard made two excellent saves low down to deny Kerzhakov and Hulk inside the first five minutes and was called upon again later in the half to stop another strike from the Brazilian. After the break, Zenit looked short of ideas until Hulk's splendid strike which Reina had no chance of reaching, while he could do nothing about Semak's goal either.

  Swamped in the first half with the movement of Danny and Hubocan on Zenit's left flank but as the game opened up after the restart, Johnson flourished, and was unlucky not to be rewarded with a goal after a surging solo run ended which his shot being saved by Malafeev. But despite his forays forward, Johnson was responsible for Zenit's second goal as Semak was allowed to ghost in at the back post to score.

  Sat very deep early on in an attempt to stifle Zenit's attacking threat in the opening stage of the tie. As the first half progressed, Gerrard moved further forward as the space opened up and produced two fine long balls which Suarez was unable to take advantage of.

  Was the more advanced of Liverpool's midfield trio but that had no effect of the potency of the visitors' attack. Long balls from the back often cut out Henderson, which didn't help, but the 22-year-old struggled to get involved all evening.

  The striker was unlucky not to open the scoring in the third minute after dragging his shot wide from a jinking run but that finish set the tone for the match as the Uruguayan went on to miss three clear chances to put Liverpool ahead. Not his best night in front of goal.
