Player Ratings: Borussia Monchengladbach 3-4 Bayern Munich

Goal evaluates the performances of everyone involved in a game that was effectively decided by the brilliance of die Roten winger Franck Ribery

    Marc-Andre ter Stegen

Nothing he could have done about Javi Martinez's cool finish, but he was beaten at his near post by Ribery for Bayern's second. The Frenchman's second-half volley was unstoppable, though, and, in truth, Bayern could have had eight by the end if it had not been for Ter Stegen.

    Roel Brouwers

Initially did a decent job alongside Stranzl but was pulled out of position with greater regularity the longer the game went on.

  • Oscar Wendt

    Oscar Wendt

Just like Jantschke, struggled badly with the trickery and movement of Bayern's wide players. Indeed, he was left chasing shadows at times.

  • Tony Jantschke

    Tony Jantschke

Struggled terribly to contain Ribery, who ended the game with two goals and two assists, but he was not alone in that regard. Kept battling right until the end.

  • Martin Stranzl

    Martin Stranzl

Went forward to open the scoring three minutes in, losing his marker before beating Neuer to an Arango free kick. Defended stoutly, thereafter, and was unlucky to end on the losing side.

  • Patrick Herrmann

    Patrick Herrmann

Showed plenty of poise in setting up Nordtveit for Gladbach's third, waiting until precisely the right time before picking out his Norwegian team-mate with a wonderfully weighted pass. Remained a threat until he ran out of steam.

  • Havard Nordtveit

    Havard Nordtveit

Scored Gladbach's third, finishing in a very composed fashion after being put through by Herrmann, and had a decent game overall, using the ball well.

  • Juan Fernando Arango

    Juan Fernando Arango

His brilliant left foot caused chaos throughout, the Venezuelan creating the opener for Stranzl with the most inviting of in-swinging free kicks. Also played his part in Gladbach's third with a sumptuous outside-of-the-foot ball to Herrmann. Also very nearly caught Neuer out with a swerving second-half set piece.

  • Granit Xhaka

    3.00

    Granit Xhaka

Played an integral role in Gladbach really sticking it up to Bayern in midfield, particularly during the first half. But he, like a lot of his team-mates, eventually faded.

  • Mike Hanke

    Mike Hanke

Double Gladbach's advantage with a composed finish, after going one-on-one with Neuer, and continued to ask questions of the Bayern defence before going off to a deserved standing ovation late on.

  • Branimir Hrgota

Branimir Hrgota Flop of the Match

Announced his arrival in the Bundesliga with a hat-trick on his first start, against Mainz last weekend, and impressed early on here, setting up strike partner Hanke for a goal with a fine through-ball. However, he disappeared in the second half.

Came on for Hrgota with 25 minutes to go but did not make any impact.

    Amin Younes

Was lively enough in the 12 minutes he was on the field.

  • Luuk de Jong

    Luuk de Jong

Saw six minutes of action late on but never got a sniff of goal.

  • Manuel Neuer

    3.00

    Manuel Neuer

Left horribly exposed by his defence for the first time this season. Indeed, there was little he could have done about any of Gladbach's goals during a crazy opening quarter. However, he was solid overall, as per usual.

  • Dante

    3
    2.50

    Dante

Typified the uncharacteristically sloppy nature of Bayern's performance, with the Brazilian gifting Gladbach a goal by passing the ball straight to Hrgota.

  • Jerome Boateng

    3.00

    Jerome Boateng

Recovered well after what was a nervy display during the opening quarter. Touch-and-go, though, whether he will hold onto his place in the starting line-up next weekend.

  • Philipp Lahm

    3.50

    Philipp Lahm

One of the few Bayern defenders to have played anywhere near their usual level, the captain was left dumbstruck by the chaos unfolding inside him but gradually brother some calm to his backline before teeing up Ribery for Bayern's sensational equaliser early in the second half.

  • David Alaba
    6
    1
    3.50

    David Alaba

Alaba did not look remotely comfortable during a torrid opening 20 minutes for the visitors but got better as the first half wore on and, by the end, he was bombing forward in fine fashion.

  • Franck Ribéry

Franck Ribéry Top of the Match

The best player on the pitch by some distance. The Frenchman almost single-handedly kept the Bavarians in the game, setting up Javi Martinez for their first goal before then netting himself with a low finish. He then levelled matters with the most sweetly struck volley before teeing up Robben for the last goal.

  • Javi Martínez

    4.00

    Javi Martínez

One of the key components in Bayern's fightback, finishing in ridiculously composed fashion after being put through by Ribery. Then set about taking charge of the midfield, which he did to predictably devastating effect.

  • Arjen Robben

    3
    3.00

    Arjen Robben

Just did not show up for opening half hour but went close to scoring shortly before the break with a snap-shot some 12 yards out. Improved immeasurably in the second period and his immaculately controlled volley ultimately proved the winner.

  • Bastian Schweinsteiger
    7

    4.00

    Bastian Schweinsteiger

Has to accept some blame for Bayern's shocking start as he and Martinez failed to get to grips with Gladbach in midfield, or provide his stuttering defence with enough protection. However, just like die Roten, he improved significantly and was the one driving his side forward in the second half.

  • Mario Mandzukic
    4
    3
    2.50

    Mario Mandzukic

Showed some neat touches on the ball but missed a succession of great chances to get on the scoresheet.

  • Thomas Müller

    3.50

    Thomas Müller

Was all fancy footwork and intelligent running, helping haul his side back into the match with a clever lay-off that Ribery fired home.

Did not make much of an impression on the game.

Took over up top from Mandzukick but did not go close to scoring.
