Player Ratings: West Ham 2-2 Manchester United

Robin Van Persie's second goal in as many games salvaged a point for Sir Alex Ferguson's men, after a tight clash at Upton Park in which the Hammers twice held the lead

    Jussi Jaaskelainen

Was a spectator in the first half until he conceded after half an hour. Made a brilliant save to deny Van Persie - who was offside, but he didn't know that. Saved by O'Neil after letting Rooney's effort slip past him, then made amends with a fine stop to keep Van Persie out.

  • Winston Reid

    Winston Reid

Went to ground too easily before Kagawa picked Valencia out for the first equaliser but, otherwise, limited United's chances and was part of a defence that stood firm late on.

    Joey O'Brien

Left Valencia completely free at the back post for United's first equaliser and let the midfielder get the better of him a couple of times. Improved late on.

    James Collins

Headed over early on and then blocked a Kagawa effort at the other end in a good first half. Solid after the break as his defence held on.

    Guy Demel

Was mostly solid in the first half as he had little to do, though he let Kagawa float away from him in the build-up to Valencia's goal. Got forward when he could, too.

  • Kevin Nolan

    Kevin Nolan

Was an annoyance to United's defence as the Hammers started brightly - though didn't directly threaten much. Brought off late on.

  • Matthew Jarvis

    Matthew Jarvis

Started very brightly and had a big hand in setting up the opener. Continued to look threatening when running with the ball and threw some decent deliveries into the box.

  • Mohamed Diame

    Mohamed Diame

Fired just wide with a decent strike in the first half and helped move the Hammers from defence to attack as they started well. Put his side back ahead with an absolute screamer. Withdrawn with under 10 minutes left.

  • Gary O'Neil

    Gary O'Neil

Had some joy on the ball early in the game while United were still in the changing room. Kept the Hammers ticking as the game went on. Saved his keeper by clearing an effort from Rooney off the line. Replaced with around 20 minutes left.

  • Andy Carroll

Andy Carroll Top of the Match

Went close early on and then assisted Vaz Te's opener. Continued to be a constant problem in the air as he fought for every ball - albeit sometimes too physically - and held it up well. Flashed an ambitious, dipping effort just wide after the break. Quieter in attack after the break but made a vital late interception in front of his own goal to deny Chicharito a winner.

  • Ricardo Vaz Te

    Ricardo Vaz Te

Got himself into the right area for his goal and looked dangerous at times. Started the move for their second on the right. Went missing at times in between, though.

Brought on late on to give the hosts fresh legs in midfield.

    Matthew Taylor

Sent on with under 10 minutes remaining as the Hammers aimed to hold on. Wasted a good opening in which he could have stolen all three points right at the death.

  • Mark Noble

    Mark Noble

Replaced O'Neil in the second half but failed to offer much on the front foot.

  • David de Gea

    David de Gea

Left with no chance for the opener. Got flattened by Carroll when bravely punching a corner away. Unsighted for Diame's goal but it was right in the corner and sweetly struck. Character-building night.

  • Rafael

    Rafael

Failed to pick up Vaz Te for his goal and didn't offer as much as he can going forward, though provided some surges upfield.

  • Patrice Evra

    Patrice Evra

Was unfortunate to be left up against Carroll in the air before West Ham's opener. Got forward to good effect a few times in the first half.

  • Phil Jones

    Phil Jones

Though United struggled for creativity early on he provided cover for the defence. Again showed his adaptability. Almost got on the end of a Van Persie flick on after the break.

  • Rio Ferdinand

    2.50

    Rio Ferdinand

Was beaten by Jarvis far too easily in the build-up to the opener as he looked slightly complacent at the back in the opening stages. Like his centre-back partner improved after United went behind.

  • Nemanja Vidic

    Nemanja Vidic

Not tight enough for the opening goal but upped his game thereafter and won a number of important headers in his own box, particularly against the dangerous Carroll.

  • Antonio Valencia

    Antonio Valencia

Found himself some space for his goal and finished calmly. Still not his old self, though, and misplaced a number of passes and crosses.

  • Michael Carrick

    Michael Carrick

His passing was a little off-target early on in the match as United struggled to hold on to the ball. Improved later in the match by finding Kagawa in the build-up to their second and then Chicarito as he tested Jaaskelainen.

  • Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney Flop of the Match

Lost the ball before the Hammers broke for the opener. Slipped Evra in with a fine ball but was pretty ineffective & sloppy for the most part. Allowed Diame time and space to turn as he put the Hammers back ahead. Nearly got a lucky break when Jaaskelainen failed to hold on to his shot, but it was cleared off the line. Soon replaced.

  • Robin van Persie
    10
    2
    3.00

    Robin van Persie

His touch was abnormally off-colour early on, and he looked slightly off the pace too. Involved in the build-up to the equaliser, though, and improved after the break - setting up a decent for Rooney with a well-worked corner and having a header denied himself. Then reacted quickest to grab his goal, though there were suspicions of offside.

  • Shinji Kagawa

    Shinji Kagawa

Beat his man effortlessly with a beautiful dummy before assisting Valencia's equaliser. He looked good on the ball all night and indirectly set up Van Persie's goal after crashing a shot off both posts.

Substitutions

  • Ryan Giggs
    3
    3
    3.00

    Ryan Giggs

Replaced the below-par Rooney and his experienced feet look more assured on the ball as he created a number of late openings.

  • Javier Hernández

    2.50

    Javier Hernández

Came on for Kagawa with around 15 minutes remaining and forced Jaaskelainen into a decent save almost immediately. Would have probably scored soon after if Carroll hadn't have intervened.
