Impossible not to feel a large degree of sympathy for the Bulgarian goalkeeper, given he was left badly exposed by his defence for Osvaldo's opener, while the Roma man's second took a significant deflection off Ivanov. Kept his side in it with a fine stop from the forward.

Lost Osvaldo early on and was lucky to see the striker head over on that occasion. However, he would not be so lucky later in the half, with Osvaldo helping himself to a brace. Competed well in the air but looked particularly uncomfortable whenever he found himself faced with the fleet-footed Giovinco.

    Nikolay Bodurov

Proved slightly more reliable than his partner at the heart of the Bulgarian defence, but even he was guilty of a dreadful pass straight to Marchisio during the first half that he was lucky Italy failed to take full advantage of.

  • Stanislav Manolev

    Stanislav Manolev

Was keen to take the game to the Euro 2012 runners-up right from the off. Indeed, he was often his country's most advanced player during the first half and his goal was just reward for his ambition and endeavour. Was not afraid to mix it with the physically imposing Ogbonna, either, and also went close to nicking it for his side late on.

Always keen to link up with Milanov down the left-hand side but his final ball was often poor. Defensively, though, he was never troubled by Maggio.

Tried to get forward whenever he could and combined well with Manolev when he did so. Was unfortunate on a couple of occasions that his brave runs beyond his winger were not picked up, with the ball ultimately running harmlessly out of play, but he did produce a cross which led to a chance for Popov. However, he sometimes struggled to keep Giaccherini quiet.

    Georgi Milanov

Was largely responsible for curbing the threat posed by the attack-minded Maggio by pinning the Napoli man back inside his own half. His crossing let him down at times but he more than made amends by finishing in some style to earn his side a draw.

  • Svetoslav Dyakov

    Svetoslav Dyakov

Really put himself about, and made a point of letting Pirlo know he was there early on with a hefty challenge. Did nothing too eye-catching or fancy but played his part in upsetting Italy's much-vaunted midfield.

  • Ivelin Popov

    Ivelin Popov

Deserves the utmost credit for applying himself to the lone striker role with such a positive attitude. Was a constant thorn in the side of the Azzurri's centre-halves, very nearly dispossessing Bonucci at one point. Also held the ball up wonderfully well and was unlucky with a sublime turn-and-volley shortly before the break. Deserved a goal.

  • Vladimir Gadzhev

    Vladimir Gadzhev

Got through a ton of work, and though he was booked for taking out Giaccherini with a mistimed challenge, his energy was key to Bulgaria's fine showing. Got forward well, too, testing Buffon with a low drive from distance early on.

  • Emil Gargorov

    Emil Gargorov

Did a sterling job in the first half getting forward in support of Popov, and went close to breaking the deadlock with an inswinging free-kick which very nearly caught Buffon out. He faded in the second period, though, and was replaced by Mitsanski.

    Georgi Sarmov

Came on with 10 minutes to go for Gadzhev and that wasn't sufficient time to make his mark.

  • Iliyan Mitsanski

    Iliyan Mitsanski

Was thrown on just on midway through the second half and made an immediate impact, teeing up Milanov for the equaliser. However, he then made a mess of an easy header in the six-yard box.

  • Gianluigi Buffon

    Gianluigi Buffon

A mixed bag for the Azzurri captain. Made an absolute mess of dealing with the opener, but was given little chance by Milanov for Bulgaria’s equaliser and then effectively earned his side a point by denying Manolev a second goal late on.

  • Andrea Barzagli

    Andrea Barzagli

Rarely ruffled at the heart of the Italy defence, the veteran centre-half was comfortable on the ball and made a couple of timely interceptions.

  • Angelo Obinze Ogbonna

    Angelo Obinze Ogbonna

Did not offer much from an offensive perspective but dealt well with Bulgaria's threat down the right-hand side, regularly using his impressive physique to good effect.

  • Leonardo Bonucci

    2.00

    Leonardo Bonucci

Played a key role in Osvaldo's equaliser with a measured ball into the area and was never afraid to put his body on the line. However, he was, for the most part, suspect in possession and was given a rough ride by Popov throughout.

  • Andrea Pirlo

    Andrea Pirlo

By no means his best game for his country, Pirlo struggled to impose himself on the game at times, and was left flat on his face at one point after being dispossessed. Still, as ever, he kept Italy ticking over and was once again their creative hub.

  • Christian Maggio

Christian Maggio Flop of the Match

Has not looked the same player since his disastrous showing against Russia just before the Euros. Did not get forward once and very nearly gifted Popov a goal by making a mess of what should have been a routine delivery from the right wing.

  • Claudio Marchisio
    0

    3.00

    Claudio Marchisio

Squandered a good chance to put Giovinco away in the opening quarter, but it was his run into the area and subsequent knockdown which effectively created the equaliser for Osvaldo. Tireless running but, overall, an average showing.

  • Daniele De Rossi

    Daniele De Rossi

Was an injury doubt for the game after picking up a knock against Inter last weekend - and it showed. He was anonymous until he picked up a booking for a hack on Dyakov midway through the first half - and disappeared again soon after.

  • Emanuele Giaccherini
    0

    Emanuele Giaccherini

Caused problems with his direct running, which resulted in a booking for Gadzhev, and he set up Osvaldo's second with a cross from the left. However, he was largely ineffective and also took some unnecessary risk at the back. Also faild to proved sufficient cover for Ogbonna.

  • Pablo Daniel Osvaldo

Pablo Daniel Osvaldo Top of the Match

His goals were by no means pretty but that will be of absolutely no concern to the Roma man. They all count and he was in the right place at the right time in both instances. His hold-up and link-up play was good, and he could even have had a couple more goals. Hugely encouraging showing.

  • Sebastian Giovinco

    Sebastian Giovinco

Was absolutely electric for Juventus last weekend but his performance in Sofia was simply shocking. Showed some early promise when dropping deep to dink a little ball in behind for Osvaldo but he was pretty much nonexistant thereafter.
