Club History
In 1927, Italo Foschi while noticing the lack of a club that could compete with the northern teams, started his ambitious project by fusing the sports reality of the Capital (Fortitudo, Roman, Alba) in AS Roma, of which he was the first president. The chosen colours were yellow and red which already characterized Roman. In 1930 the first derby took place, won by Lazio, and the matches from a distance against Juventus started. After ten years, coach Schaffer took Roma to their first historic Scudetto. However, difficult years followed, culminated by relegation to Serie B in the 1950-51 season. The 1960s brought two Coppa Italia wins and Coppa delle Fiere, while in the 1970s, under the guidance of Anzalone, Nils Liedholm arrived to Roma, where he valued young ambitious players and guided the team to good positions in the league. The turning point, however, arrived in 1979, when Dino Viola became president, helping the team to a quality jump, taking Roma to their second Scudetto and to the Champions Cup final, lost against Liverpool on penalties. Following these moments of glory, a slow decline started till the death of Viola in 1991, and the UEFA Cup final lost against Inter. Franco Sensi eventually took over and thanks to important investments and his care for the club, he took the team consistently to the top, succeeding at times to push the national equilibrium towards the Capital. After Mazzone, Zeman and Bianchi, Sensi brought in Capello, and together with him undertook an ambitious campaign in the transfer market. In 2000-01 the dream became reality after a great run, thanks to the maturity of Totti, goal scorers like Montella and Batistuta and a team which in general did not seem to have any weak points. In the following years, Roma competed in the upper echelons of Serie A, but the spectre of financial problems took over, which put the club’s participation in the league at risk. It was once again the sacrifice of Sensi that saved the club, which is now expected to change mentality and put the emphasis on younger players.
