Club History
Kingfisher East Bengal FC is one of the biggest and most supported Indian football clubs based in Kolkata in West Bengal. The club was established in 1920 as East Bengal Club but in 2003 was rechristened as Kingfisher East Bengal FC as United Breweries gained a 50% share.
East Bengal play their home matches at the 120,000 capacity Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata during national level matches and at the East Bengal Ground, which has a capacity of 24,000, on other occasions.
Besides their numerous honours in Indian football, East Bengal are known for their memorable displays against foreign clubs. The English FA assigned them as “The Best Club Of India” back in 1951 after a hat-trick of IFA Shield titles betwee 1949 and 1951.
One of their best wins came in the 1970 IFA Shield final when they beat Iran's PAS club 1-0 in front of 80,000 supporters. It was the first victory of an Indian club over a foreign team in the post-independence era.
They were also the first Indian club to participate in Asian club competitions 10 times.
In July 2003, East Bengal became the first Indian club to win a continental competition of repute, when they won the Asean Cup held at Jakarta after beating Thailand's BEC Tero Sasana in the final.
They became the first club in India to win back to back National Football League titles in 2003 & 2004. East Bengal also bears the nickname of the 'Red-and-Gold Brigade' and of course has a fierce rivalry with Mohun Bagan.
