Players who were good last season but have flopped this year
1. Thomas Vermaelen
The Belgian international who joined the Gunners from Ajax for around €10 million in the summer of 2009 has been a pillar of strength in an otherwise leaky back four for the Emirates Stadium side. Even last year he was one among a few constants in what was a rather turbulent campaign forced largely by the late departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri and the panic-buying that ensued thereafter. However, this term Vermaelen was handed the captain’s armband, following Robin Van Persie’s move to Manchester United and it appears, the centre-back has been unable to cope with the pressures of leadership. Moreover, the arrival of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny's continued good form has meant the stopper has been unable to command a regular starting place in Arsene Wenger’s side. Also a recent spell on the bench has only served to fuel more speculation regarding his future in North London.
