26. Mats Hummels
Bayern Munich must be kicking themselves for letting a 19-year-old Hummels leave the club back in January 2008, first on loan to Borussia Dortmund, and then a year later allowing the deal to be made permanent for just €4 million. The composed defender's progess since leaving the Bavarian giants has been astonishing. With Mats Hummels in defence Dortmund have won back-to-back Bundesliga titles and a DFB Pokal last season, the defender scoring during his side's 5-2 drubbing of his former side Bayern in the final. His ability to stride forward out of defence with the ball at his feet has drawn admiration from some key figures within the game, with Zinedine Zidane going as far as to label Hummels the player of the tournament at the recent European Championship as he excelled for the German national side as they made it to the semi-finals.Moment of the Season - Scoring what must have been a goal to savour against his former club Bayern Munich during Borussia Dortmund's emphatic DFB Pokal final win.
Editor's view - "Mats Hummels has proven himself as the leading defender in the Bundesliga and showed his class as Borussia Dortmund marched on to a second consecutive Bundesliga title. He also impressed at the Euros although I will be the first to admit, he was not without his faults." - Francois Duchateau - Chief editor for Goal.com Germany
