28. Mario Gomez
Mario Gomez proved his hordes of doubters wrong this year as he excelled for both Bayern Munich and Germany. The 27-year-old was unfortunate to finish the season trophyless as his club side finished runners-up in three competitions: the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal and the Champions League, before his national team were then knocked out by Italy at the semi-final stage of Euro 2012. The striker was prolific for Bayern in the Bundesliga and in Europe, with his haul of 13 goals in 14 Champions League appearances a particularly impressive statistic. At Euro 2012 he silenced many critics with three goals in the group stages of the competition, including a divinely-taken brace against Netherlands during his side's 2-1 win.Moment of the Season - His fine spin and finish past the Netherlands goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg that set Germany on their way to a 2-1 win during the Euro 2012 group stages.
Editor's view - "Mario Gomez is player who always sparks a debate and it is a shame. He scored 41 goals last season for Bayern, three for Germany in the Euros yet still, so many experts doubt him. Why? Admittedly, Gomez may not be the most mobile of players but as an out-and-out striker, he is one of the best around." - Andreas Becker - Deputy editor for Goal.com Germany
