Before transferring to Norwegian side Lillestrøm in 2004, Koren had brief stints at Davograd and Radlje. Koren was one of the most highly rated players in the Norwegian league and it came to no surprise when clubs like Leeds United and Manchester City came knocking.

However, he chose West Bromwich Albion, and on January 4, 2007, he signed for them in a Bosman ruling, penning a contract for 18 months. He made his debut in West Brom's late win over Leeds United in the FA Cup. Koren's first goal for the Baggies came in a 7-0 thrashing of Barnsley and it incidentally happened to be the last day of the season as well.

That win ensured West Brom qualified for the Championship play-offs. Koren however missed out on an opportunity to play in the Premier League that year as in spite of reaching the finals, they went down 1-0 to Derby at Wembley.

He had been hailed by then West Brom manager Tony Mowbray as a model pro. In October 2007, Koren bagged a brace against Southampton in their 3-2 defeat but nonetheless that earned him a place in the Championship Team Of The Week. His first Premier League goal came against Middlesbrough in a 3-0 victory and was even named Man of the Match.
