It is hard to remember that Yasuhito Endo was the only outfield player who was named in the squad but didn’t play at the 2006 World Cup as now he is an indispensable player for Japan.

He conducts the rhythm of the games in Japan’s midfield. The 'Maestro of Japan’ is technically excellent as are his set pieces.  He reads the game very well and can play almost anywhere in midfield.

He moved to Kyoto Purple Sanga in 1999 and in the same year, he participated in the World Youth Cup in Nigeria as a member of U-20 Japan national team.

He moved to Gamba Osaka in 2001 and quickly became a key player for the Kansai club. In 2002 he was called up to Japan national team for the first time and in 2003 he was named in the J-league Best Eleven

He improved more as Gamba Osaka improved and in 2005, together they won the Japanese title for the first time. The pair went on to prove their ability to Asia and the world, winning the 2008 Asian Champions League with Endo being named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

That earned a place at FIFA’s Club World Cup in 2008 as Asian champions. Osaka faced Manchester United in the semi-final and while the European champions scored five, Osaka got three and the year after, Endo was named as the Asian Player of the Year.

Did you know?

His elder brother, Akihiro Endo, was professional player too. He wore No. 10 when Japan team beat Brazil 1-0 at Olympics Games Atlanta in 1996. Also he played with Shunsuke Nakamura and had good combination like his brother does now.
