Ten years ago it seemed that Pirlo's would be mediocre, despite his great talent. His life changed when he moved from Inter to their rivals Milan: Carlo Ancelotti turned him from an offensive midfielder into a deep-lying playmaker, the role that highlighted his great technical skill and vision.

With the Rossoneri shirt, he became one of the best midfielders in the world. His international debut was in 2003 along with Milan's victory in the Champions League, but he wrote his story mostly in 2006 winning the World Cup with Italy as a protagonist. A goal versus Ghana, the assist for Fabio Grosso against Germany, and the first penalty scored in the final.

He has always performed well for the national team and set the record for caps at the Under-21 level (46), where he won a European Cup (2000) and an Olympic Bronze Medal (2004).

Marcello Lippi (who sold Pirlo when he was Inter coach) considers him a fundamental element of the midfield, even if he has yet to find a way to let Pirlo and De Rossi play togheter without misunderstandings as they play a similar role in terms of their positioning. Pirlo is famous also for his ability on free-kicks. He can score from everywhere on the pitch, because he's able to hit the ball with unpredictable trajectories (as he did against Real Madrid during the past Champions League). His detractors always accuse him of not being aggressive enough and not useful when his team has to defend. However, with his experience and his tactical intelligence, he can be one of the stars of the next World Cup.

Did you know?

Former Brazilian coach, Carlos Alberto Parreira, said about Pirlo: "He's the only Italian player that could be in the Brazil starting XI. There aren't any Brazilian players with his caractheristics."
