Bastian Schweinsteiger

Sebastian Schweinsteiger earned his fame at the 2006 World Cup, when he reached third place with the German national squad. In the third-place playoff he scored twice against Portugal and was the 'man of the match.' It was a worthy finish to a good tournament from Schweinsteiger and the German team. Will he be able to repeat his success at this competition?
At his club, Bayern Munich, he has found himself utilised as a defensive midfielder this season. In that position, he has silenced his critics with excellent displays. In the national squad he has been deployed as right winger thus far, but it might well happen that coach Joachim Löw will also use him in central midfield now that it is an option. Wherever he will play, it is very likely that “Schweini” will be in the starting XI in South Africa.

Bastian’s two-year older brother, Tobias Schweinsteiger, is also a footballer. He currently plays in Germany’s third league with his SpVgg Unterhaching.

German Cup-Winner 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2008
Third place World Cup 2006
