Steven Gerrard, Liverpool's inspirational captain and icon, will be going into the 2010 World Cup knowing that this could be his last chance to demonstrate his class on the ultimate stage.

The 29-year-old has been one of the Premier League's most consistent and prolific attacking midfielders for more than half a decade but his international form has never quite hit the heights of club performances.

But the signs are good, and under Fabio Capello's management Gerrard looks to be enjoying himself in an England shirt once again, playing in a system which seems to suit both him and a Chelsea's Frank Lampard - a conundrum that bamboozled previous international managers.

Born in Whiston, Merseyside, Gerrard grew up fanatical about football, and had trials at a number of clubs including Manchester United, before he signed for Liverpool on a Youth Training Scheme (YTS). In 1997, he signed his first professional contract with the club, and a year later made his first team debut.

In the years that followed Gerrard grew from a lightweight, injury-prone teenager to one of Liverpool's all-time greats and one of the finest all-round players in the modern era.

In Liverpool's 2000-2001 treble-winning season the midfielder's growing influence in the side became apparent as did his new found goal-scoring prowess.

His surging runs into the box and powerful shooting were a feature of the season in which Gerrard scored ten goals, helping Liverpool lift the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and League Cup.

Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier rewarded his young star with the captain's armband in October 2003 - a decision that would prove to be the making of Gerrard as Liverpool's most lauded player since Kenny Dalglish.

After a season in which Liverpool fell short of challenging for the Premier League title yet again, Gerrard came close to leaving Liverpool for Chelsea in 2004.
But with new manager Rafa Benitez joining from Valencia he decided to stay on and enjoyed his most memorable season for Liverpool to date.

Gerrard was instrumental in driving his team towards the Champions League final where he became the architect of Liverpool's miraculous comeback from three goals down at half time against AC Milan. The following season, Gerrard lifted the FA Cup after scoring twice to deny West Ham and take the match to penalties, further underlining his status as Liverpool's 'Captain Fantastic'.

On his day, Gerrard can be as good as any attacking midfielder in the world and few players in the world can dominate matches quite like the 29-year-old.

But in a season, in which Liverpool have struggled and both he and prolific striker Fernando Torres, with whom Gerrard shares an almost telepathic understanding, have suffered from injuries, he has all too often fallen short of the high standards he has set for himself.

The 2010 World Cup could prove just the tonic, and having scored in nearly every major final he has appeared in, few would bet against England's 'big game' player from being one of the players of the tournament.

Did You Know?

Steven Gerrard's footballing career was almost over before it even began. When he was ten he was playing on wasteland near his home and a rusty rake went through one of his toes.
