‘England could have won Euro 2012 with Fabio Capello’ - Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini

The Citizens coach lamented his Italian compatriot’s resignation and reveals he feels ‘very sorry’ for the former Real Madrid and Juventus boss

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini believes England could have tasted victory at this summer’s Euro 2012, but only if Fabio Capello was still in charge.

The Italian resigned as head coach of the Three Lions national team on Wednesday over a dispute with the FA regarding the stripping of John Terry as captain following allegations of racism.

The Etihad Stadium manager believes winning Euro 2012 was possible for England under the former Real Madrid and Juventus boss.

Mancini told reporters on Friday: “I don't know the reasons but I can say the national team has lost a top manager.

“I think under Fabio Capello England had a big chance to win the European Championships.

“I respect his decision and I am very sorry for him.”

The favourites to fill the vacancy are Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp, England Under-21 coach Stuart Pearce, West Bromwich Albion manager Roy Hodgson and experienced international coach Guus Hiddink.
