Over £2 billion generated from tournament

Fifa president Sepp Blatter announced on Thursday that the 2010 World Cup in South Africa was a stunning financial success.

The first World Cup ever to take place on African soil was a cash cow for Fifa, pushing their revenues above $4 billion (£2.4bn).

"I am the happiest man to announce that the World Cup in South Africa was a huge financial success for everybody, for Africa, for South Africa and for FIFA," he said, according to AFP.

"For the first time in FIFA's four-year accounts we are over $4bn."

A huge chunk of the revenue, £2.24bn, was earned in relation to the World Cup last summer.
