Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes could still find the door to a possible international recall open, with England gaffer Fabio Capello set to seek clarification from the player about remarks he made over the summer, according to a report from The Guardian.

The Italian attempted to persuade the 35-year-old to come out of international tournament for the summer's World Cup, but to no avail. Scholes later stated that he regretted not answering his country's call to go to South Africa, and Capello is apparently now hopeful that the veteran might yet be persuaded to pull on a white shirt once again.

"I had only been given a couple of hours, so it was a bit of a rush job," Scholes said last week of his decision.

"But the World Cup is the biggest tournament you can be involved in. I wish I had gone. I did feel as though I had made the wrong decision. There was a touch of regret, but it doesn't matter now. It's gone."

Scholes also cited time as an issue, and believed that had he been given longer to consider the offer he may well have given a positive response.

It is still apparently considered unlikely by the FA that Scholes will be involved in next month's Euro 2012 qualifiers, particularly as there have been widespread calls for the England manager to look towards a younger generation of talent.
