Australian Ties Arrive To Lift Goan Football Higher From The Roots
The talent search continues...
By Anselm Noronha
Goa Football Association (GFA) is in it's golden year ever since it has been constituted as an independent body, on 22 December 1959, and has set up a fund of 60 lakh for three years to christen an ambitous grassroot programme.
The budget which is being funded through agencies like the Australian Sports Outreach Programme (ASOP) and Football Federation Australia (FFA) will be binded by signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Australian government.
The MoU was signed and represented by GFA Hon. Secretary Savio Messias, John Boultbee representing Australian Sports Commission and FFA's Head of National Teams and Football Development, on Friday.
An approximate 800 to 1,000 children ranging from age group 8 to 12 are expected to benefit from the initiative which is thought viable to start after the monsoons, at 16 possible destinations in the state of Goa, with initial plans at 10 destinations.
The latest talent adventure in the state was in April, this year, conducted by Coca-Cola by organizing the U-16 Coca-Cola Celebration Cup. The tournament was graced by 48 village teams of Goa. All matches were played in a 7-a-side format, involving the participation of more than 672 young footballers in the age group of 12-15 years, according to Coca-Cola India web site.
