Spain Goalkeeper Pepe Reina Labels Blunder Against Argentina An 'Accident'
Liverpool & Spain goalkeeper Pepe Reina is unconcerned about the slip that allowed Carlos Tevez to score in the 4-1 defeat to Argentina.
By Paul Madden
Spain goalkeeper Pepe Reina has played down the significance of his blunder in the world champions 4-1 friendly defeat to Argentina at el Monumental in Buenos Aires.
The Liverpool custodian slipped when trying to control a backpass from Alvaro Arbeloa, allowing Carlos Tevez to steal in and score Argentina's third goal. Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain had put the hosts in a commanding position prior to the gaffe and after the break Fernando Llorente scored for Spain before Kun Aguero sealed the win for the South Americans.
"In football when a goalkeeper make a mistake the full weight of the team falls on your shoulders. It was an accident, I prefer a slip to a technical failure. I must accept it, see it as an accident and move forward. Now I have to think about making use of whatever minutes the coach gives me," he said afterwards as quoted by AS before noting that Argentina deserved their triumph but added the result is of little consequence.
"They were highly motivated because they played against the world champions and many Argentine players are known because they play in Spain. It's a loss like many in football. I wish I only got defeats in friendlies. We should not dramatise it. The third goal condemned us for the entire game.
"Argentina should be congratulated but the loss was too severe."
