Ghana’s stand-in captain Michael Essien is still not in Angola after being stranded in Europe due to continuing poor weather conditions.

According to the Ghana FA, the Chelsea star will hopefully touch down on Wednesday, two days before the Black Stars' opening match against Ivory Coast. The big freeze across Europe delayed his scheduled departure from London on Sunday.

"Essien was unable to make it out of London on Sunday. The bad weather prevented him from doing so as some flights were cancelled.

"We are still in touch and he is now booked to arrive on Wednesday, in time for our opening group game on Friday against Ivory Coast," said Randy Abbey the FA spokesperson on ghanafa.org.

Essien was scheduled to arrive last Sunday night in Cabinda but heavy snowfall in London, part of the UK's worst weather conditions in decades, stalled his travel plans.

He is expected to now fly to Portugal and make a transfer to Angola.

Ghana are now only scheduled to play Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso in Group B after Togo's withdrawal from the competition following a deadly gun attack on their bus in the enclave of Cabinda.
