Federation Cup Preview: Sporting Clube De Goa - Mumbai FC
The Group C action at Silchar begins...
Something’s Got To Give...
Sporting have a had a miserable I-League season thus far, and are sitting second last at the bottom of the table(ahead of Viva Kerala on goal difference).
In general Sporting are a good ’footballing’ side with players capable of playing attractive football. There is a general feeling that Sporting have underachieved in the I-League and are capable of much more. The board felt the same too probably and hence, Roy Baretto was sacked and replaced by Vishwas Gaonkar.
The Flaming Orange will come into the tournament seeking a new start under a new coach. They have the talent at their disposal to turn things around. Their defence led by Chinta has been reinforced with Japanese defender Kenji Arai coming in.
Mixed Bags...
Coach Khalid Jamil’s side are a mixed bag, a pretty unpredictable. Sitting mid table at the eighth slot, it’s difficult to predict what Mumbai FC will show up on the day.
A disappointing start to the season was followed by a series of draws before MFC finally picked up momentum by beating in-form teams Mohun Bagan and JCT. And then they ended the first half of the season with a goalless draw against Sporting.
It will be fascinating to see which side rises to the challenge this time around as both are just as unpredictable. But with the format of the tournament, the first match will be crucial and both teams will look for maximum points.
Form Guide:
Sporting Club De Goa
MFC 0-0 SCG
SCG 2-2 Mohun Bagan
SCG 1-1 Chirag United
Mumbai FC
MFC 0-0 SCG
MFC 2-0 JCT
Mohun Bagan 1-2 MFC
Team News
The two teams have no injury worries except for Sporting whose Wilton Gomes has been missing since the start of the I-League.
Players To Watch
Sporting Club De Goa
Joseph Pereira is the general of the team and most Sporting attacks go through him. If Sporting are to get anything out of the match they will need Pereira in form. The midfield can contribute goals too and thus will be an effective goal threat.
Mumbai FC
Abhishek Yadav is an inspirational figure within the club. The forward hasn’t enjoyed a prolific I-League season thus far but is capable of finding the back of the net. His strike partnership with Kanya Vincent will be crucial for the MFC cause.
Key Areas:
The key area in the match will be the middle of the ground as the battle is likely to be won by the superior midfield. Both teams have stable defences and good attacking threat, however both mid-fields are inconsistent and hence whichever team manages to dominate in the middle of the park should hold the upper hand.
