Goal.com's Sarthak Dubey takes a look at the top and flop of the day from last night's quarterfinal game between Spain and France...

TOP OF THE DAY

Xabi Alonso

Alonso showed his perfect timing into the box

STATS CENTRE
Goals 2
Passes 96
Passing Accuracy 97.1%
Interceptions 3

It was an absolute joy to watch Spain's Xabi Alonso run into the box with such emphatic timing and score a rare header to guide his team into the semi-finals to be played against Portugal. The Real Madrid midfielder is in prime form and his late penallty pretty much sealed the deal for the Spaniards. It was also a very special occassion for the former Liverpool man as this was his 100th cap for Spain.

Laurent Blanc insisted that it was impossible to compete with Spain for possession and anticipated that France would enjoy only a third of the ball. His prediction was not too bad. "It will be a tough game against Portugal, like it was today but if we stick to our style we have a good chance to win. I'm very happy with my performance, and with the team in general," he said. "The first half was very good but the second half was a bit more difficult."

FLOP OF THE DAY

Karim Benzema

Its just not been Benzema's tournament

STATS CENTRE
Goals 0
Total shots on goal 0
Shots on target 0
Shots off target 2

The statistics say it all. Zero goals and zero shots on goal. Saying that Karim Benzema was inefficient against Spain would be an underestimation. Quite certainly, this has just not been Benzema's tournament as he has failed to fire in any of the matches. Probably a long holiday can help him rejuvenate for the next season.

The way France set out their stall suggested it would be a tough evening for the Real Madrid striker and so it proved. He almost had nothing to do in the entire game and could have played cards with Iker Casillas instead (another player who almost had nothing to do).

POST MATCH QUOTE OF THE DAY

The good thing about football is you always have a chance for revenge and today was our moment [against France]"
