After Euro 2012 co-hosts Ukraine were denied an equaliser in their pivotal Group D clash with England the Fifa president has succumbed to pressure and admitted it is a must

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has confirmed goal-line technology is ‘no longer an alternative but a necessity’.

Tuesday’s Group D clash between England and Ukraine saw the latest in a long line of mistakes from officials as co-hosts Ukraine were denied a potentially vital equaliser against the Three Lions when John Terry hooked Marko Devic’s effort out of Joe Hart’s goal.

Following England’s unceremonious defeat to Germany at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Blatter was pressured into introducing extra officials behind the goals after Frank Lampard’s first-half strike, which clearly crossed the line, went unseen by the officials.

However, the extra officials appear to have made little difference with many still calling for goal-line technology to be deployed.

And it now seems those calling for goal-line technology have been granted their wish with Blatter tweeting: “After last night’s match #GLT [Goal-line technology] is no longer an alternative but a necessity.
