Phil Neville set for England backroom role at Euro 2012 - report

Everton captain Phil Neville looks set to be approached for an England coaching role, according to The Independent.

The Football Association have discussed various candidates, including Alan Shearer, Jamie Carragher and even Phil's older brother Gary Neville.

But, the 35-year-old is considered to be national team manager Roy Hodgson's favoured choice as he begins to piece together his European Championship backroom staff.

Despite not having made an appearance for England since 2007, Neville has received 59 caps and has recently completed his Uefa B licence coaching badge, throwing him into contention for the role.

The current FA head of development, Gareth Southgate, remains a popular choice, with his appointment allowing a full-time commitment, unlike Neville who will return to Everton after the tournament to begin his eighth season as the club.

Hodgson has removed Stuart Pearce from the role that he held under Fabio Capello, employing Ray Lewington as his temporary assistant, with a view to hiring someone permanently for the summer tournament.
