Jermain Defoe believes that England can win Euro 2012 after Wayne Rooney's international ban was reduced on appeal to two games.

The Manchester United man was facing the prospect of missing out on all of England's group games after being hit with a three-match suspension for kicking an opponent in the final qualifier against Montenegro.

Rooney will now be available for England's final group game against co-hosts Ukraine and the Tottenham hotshot hopes he can have an impact deep into the tournament.

Defoe told the Daily Mirror: "Obviously he’s got the two games and it’s something he wanted.

“I’m sure all the fans will be happy. When you get to a tournament you want all your top players, if you’ve got a chance of winning you need all your leading performers.

“You don’t want anyone to get injured, you don’t want anyone to get suspended and you want the squad to be as strong as possible.

“I think then you stand a good chance so it was a good day.”

The Spurs man was part of England's disastrous World Cup squad in 2010 but believes that Fabio Capello's players can do much better this time.

When asked if England could win the tournament, Defo responded: “Why not? You have to be confident.

“People want to see a reaction. If we don’t win it, they want to see us at least get to the semi-finals and do something special.

"It’s been a long time and a lot of people aren’t happy about what happened at the World Cup in South Africa.

“It’s going to be difficult but you have to be positive.”
