Marseille striker Sougou desperate to secure second spot

The Senegalese believes securing their current spot behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain will give the team confidence going into the 2013/14 campaign

Olympique de Marseille striker Modou Sougou is desperate for his side to secure second place in Ligue 1 this season.

While league leaders Paris Saint-Germain are closing in on the title, l'OM find themselves embroiled in a battle for second along with the likes of Olympique Lyonnais and Lille, and Sougou feels it is vital his side cling on to their position as they look to build the confidence to mount a title challenge next season.

"The team will be better prepared mentally [for next season] if we take second place," he told the club's official website. "There are teams who have been in trouble and are now back in the race, such as Lyon and Lille. We are in constant competition.

“Even if people do not like the way we play, we are pleased with our results."

Marseille head to Lorient on Saturday hoping to extend their two point lead over third place Lyon, but Sougou has warned they face a side currently enjoying a rich vein of form.

“Lorient is one of the best teams of the moment along with Lille," he warned. "They are stuffed full of talent.

"This will be an interesting game for both teams. The game will open, it can work in our favor. But we must focus on our game and what we have to do."
