Brazil legend Carlos Alberto has announced support for Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the FIFA Ballon d’Or award which will be announced on January 13, 2014.
Apart from Ronaldo, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery have been shortlisted for the prestigious award. The 69-year old opines that the French winger cannot be compared to the other two nominees who are on a higher level.
“Ronaldo is in a very good phase. I believe he will win the award for best player in the world. Messi has injury and is not playing. I like Ribery but he is not on the same level as Ronaldo or Messi. But in this moment, he is playing very well. It would be very tough to pick out a winner,” he told Goal.
However, he was quick to point that his countryman Neymar shall win the Ballon d’Or award in the near future and will become a better player than Messi at Barcelona.
“Neymar is 21 years old. We have confidence in Neymar for the World Cup and for sure, in the next few years, he will be the best in the world.”
David Luiz has struggled to win a regular berth in the Chelsea line-up this season under new manager Jose Mourinho while Julio Cesar has fallen out of favour at QPR.
Alberto backed the duo to make it into the Brazilian squad for the World Cup next year in spite of them not playing regularly at their respective clubs.
“We don’t worry about our defense. We still have good players for the national team and it’s not only just David Luiz and Thiago Silva. For sure, Luiz will be in the team even if he doesn’t play regularly for his club. Whenever Julio Cesar is called for the national team, he does well. So, no problem.”
