Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes is looking forward to the second half of the season, with star performers Arjen Robben and Bastian Schweinsteiger now both approaching full fitness.
After a productive training camp in Qatar, the Bavarians moved on to New Delhi, where they routed India 4-0 in what was a testimonial game for national team hero Baichung Bhutia.
Thomas Muller bagged a brace for Bayern, while Mario Gomez was also on target. However, the most significant name on the scoresheet was that of Schweinsteiger, who had been out of action for two months with a shoulder injury.
“On behalf of Bayern, I would like to thank everybody in India for welcoming us and having us for this game,” Heynckes said in his post-game press conference.
“It was a good camp in Qatar and today we played a good match in India.
“Of course, India’s level is not up to ours so it would be unfair to make any judgements from this one game.
“We could and should have scored more goals but, credit to India, they defended well in numbers.
“We had a good preparation for the Bundesliga and now with Schweinsteiger back as well and Robben also fully fit we hope to have a very good second half of the season.”
Dutch winger Robben, who returned to action shortly before the winter break, was delighted to have gotten another game under his belt.
“First of all, thanks to everybody in India including the fans,” the Netherlands international enthused. “It was great to see such enthusiasm.
“We had a great experience here and a great training camp in Qatar.
“The Indian team gave a very good account of themselves. Physically, they looked very strong and I am sure with better facilities Indian football and footballers will improve.
“The pitch was good, and long as well, so it was a very good run-out for us.”
Bayern Munich return to Bundesliga duty on January 20 with an away game against Borussia Monchengladbach.
