Weidenfeller: Dortmund cannot finish fourth

The BVB goalkeeper is hoping they do not slip any further down the table and, though the Bundesliga title looks long gone, he thinks cup success is a possibility
Roman Weidenfeller says it is not an option for Borussia Dortmund to finish fourth in the Bundesliga this season.

BVB sit behind Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach in the German top flight after the injury-struck side picked up four points from their final six games of 2013.

"No one [at Dortmund] can stand to see us finish in fourth," the Signal Iduna Park goalkeeper told SID.

"We will try to attack the top of the table again, but every year it gets more difficult as other teams gear up around us."

Although Bayern sit seven points clear of second place in the Bundesliga, looking imperious under Pep Guardiola, Weidenfeller thinks the DFB-Pokal and Champions League remain winnable competitions for Jurgen Klopp's men.

"Surely we can still win titles this season," the 33-year-old Germany international added. "But we must not to neglect to do our homework on competitors."

BVB face Augsburg on their return to Bundesliga football on January 25, with their DFB-Pokal quarter-final against Eintracht Frankfurt on February 11 and the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash with Zenit St Petersburg a fortnight later.
