The full-back is quietly optimistic ahead of Saturday's clash and is additionally motivated by the prospect of winning the trophy at Signal Iduna ParkMarcel Schmelzer insists Borussia Dortmund are more than capable of beating Bayern Munich in the DFL-Supercup despite a troublesome pre-season for last season's Champions League finalists.
After losing Mario Gotze to Bayern, Jurgen Klopp's side fell to a surprise defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach as they continued their preparations ahead of the new season.
New signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan has also been ruled out of Saturday's game through injury, along with right-back Lukasz Piszczek, while the Bavarians have romped to defeat in each of their pre-season games under new coach Pep Guardiola.
However, Schmelzer remains confident Dortmund have more than enough quality to not just compete for the Supercup, but to lift the trophy in front of their own fans at Signal Iduna Park.
"The Supercup is an official title, therefore it would be nice if we could win that too," the 25-year-old full-back told reporters ahead of Saturday's game.
"That's what we want because we can contest the final at home. In the first pre-season games we saw we already have a good side (without the new signings) and hopefully everyone will soon be fit."
BVB have gone quietly about their business in the summer transfer window, purchasing Mkhitaryan from Shakhtar Donetsk as a like-for-like replacement for Gotze, while striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang arrived from Saint-Etienne to provide competition for Robert Lewandowski.
