The Germany international refuses to give up on his dream of winning European club football's elite competition

Ilkay Gundogan is confident that Borussia Dortmund will lift the Champions League at some point in the near future after reflecting on their defeat to Bayern Munich.

Head coach Jurgen Klopp's men were beaten 2-1 by their domestic rivals at Wembley back in May, but the Germany midfielder has stressed that they will do their utmost to conquer Europe and make up for that cruel disappointment.

"When you make it to the final, you obviously want to go on and win it. My dream of winning the Champions League is still there, though. We will work very hard to soon make it to the final again and we will win it then," the 22-year-old Gundogan told Kicker.

"Making it to the final this season was a dream come true. I always dreamed of watching the Champions League final from the stands as a kid. And now I was out there on the pitch fighting for the trophy. It was an incredibly emotional moment for me.

"We eventually didn't win the trophy, but we won the hearts of many fans with our style of play. That means something to us as well.

"It has still been a good season for us. We made it to the Champions League final, the quarter-final of the DFB-Pokal and finished second in the league table. That shows that the last two years were not down to luck. We will give our all again in the new season."

Dortmund last won the Champions League in 1997 when they beat Juventus in the final.
