Tempers flared in the Jupiler League this weekend, as Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez saw red for swinging a right hand at Leuven’s Bjorn RuytinxManagers and coaches often call on their players to get stuck in, roll their sleeves up, and be willing to fight for the cause. Well, in Belgium this weekend, one guy took that a little too literally.
Standard Liege midfielder Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez was sent off just before half-time during their Jupiler League match against OH Leuven, for retaliating after a leg-breaker of a challenge from Bjorn Ruytinx.
The Leuven forward went in hard, his foot stamping down on the midfielder’s ankle, who was left on the floor.
Seemingly pleased with his efforts, Ruyinx smirked away the protests from Standard players, before Carcela-Gonzalez struggled to his feet, and unleashed a right-handed punch.
Ruytinx promptly dropped to the floor, while Carcela-Gonzalez was shown a straight red, before being carried down the tunnel after struggling to put weight on his injured ankle.
