The coach of the Indian side was cautiously optimistic about qualifying after losing out 2-1 against Home United in Singapore...Churchill Brothers narrowly lost out against Home United in an AFC Cup Group Round E match played in Singapore.
Mariano Dias, the head coach of the reigning Indian champions spoke after the match regarding their performance on the day and their hopes of progression.
When asked whether he thought the opposition deserved the win, Dias said that a draw would have been a fair result but defensive mistakes had cost them. He also lamented the absence of first team players due to fatigue and injury which was a big blow.
"Actually I think the match would have gone (ended in) for a draw if our defence did not commit mistakes but I think Home were much superior than us but we had our share and we scored. We were without three of our regular guys, but that’s because we are playing in the I-League and on every third day, so that takes a lot of energy out of us. Our players tried to give our best but since we didn’t have our regular players, we could not try much better."
Talking about his qualification chances, Dias was pretty confident of going through and said that of the three teams battling for second, Churchill had the best chance.
"We have two matches, one at home against Persipura Jayapura and one in Maldvies against New Radiant. So we still have chances. I think we have better chance, because Persipura is on 10 points and we have six points and you don’t know what will happen in the game. We have more advantage since we are on six points and we have one match at home," he said.
