Asian Cup favourites Australia may have to make do without the services of star player Tim Cahill in the quarter-finals after the midfielder sustained a thigh injury in the victory over Bahrain.

The Everton star limped off the pitch in the dying moments of the game. While the extent of the injury is unknown, there are question marks over Cahill’s participation in the quarter-final match on Saturday.

Cahill has been in sparkling form this season and has single handedly carried Everton's goal threat at times, scoring nine of the Toffees' 25 Premier League goals.

The 31-year-old, who is also Australia’s joint top scorer in the competition alongside Mile Jedinak, didn’t train with the rest of the squad on Wednesday morning at the Al Wakra stadium.

Team-mate Harry Kewell showed faith that the experienced striker would recover from his ailment and be ready for the knockout stages in time.

“He is an experienced player and has played in the Premiership. He knows how to take care of his body and can play through injuries,” he said.

Players such as Luke Wilkshire, Jason Culina and David Carney are also struggling for fitness.
