India stumbled at the last hurdle, as they were upstaged by Afghanistan in the final of the 2013 SAFF Championship, which meant the Blue Tigers failed to defend their crown.

That was not a surprise for anyone after their poor showing in the group stages. However their performances improved in the knockout stages, as they did well to beat the in-form side Maldives, before playing well and going down to Afghanistan, thanks to their profligate finish.
