The winning side of SAFF Championship was given a rousing welcome back home by the fans, which included the president…

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai met the national team players at the Kabul airport upon their return and has reportedly promised a reward for every member of the squad.

“The President received and congratulated every member of the team on their arrival and wished them continued success,” was a statement from Karzai’s office on September 12.

The Lions of Khorasan stunned the Indians with a 2-0 win on Wednesday to win their first ever international tournament.

The team stunned six-time champions India 2-0 Wednesday night to win the South Asian Football Federation (Saff) title in the Nepalese capital Kathmandu. The victory was a rare moment of joy in Afghanistan, where a war is being fought for the last 12 years.

President Hamid Karzai heralded the team’s ‘historic victory’ as he welcomed each player individually at the Kabul international airport, where fans waved flags and blew horns.

Several Afghan governors have reportedly sent invitations to the national side to visit their states while a few have raised $100,000 for the Afghanistan Football federation (AFF).

Thousands of fans gathered at the national football stadium and chanted “Afghanistan Zindabad (Long Live Afghanistan)”.

In the latest FIFA world rankings released on Thursday, Afghanistan have moved to the 132nd spot.
