The Brazilian coach is optimistic of his team’s chances at the SAFF Championship though admitting being in a tough group…
Claudio Roberto Silveira, the Sri Lankan coach, is pleased with his team’s preparation for the SAFF Championship where they are grouped alongside the Afghanistan, Bhutan and Maldives.
The team were in Thailand to play a few practice games in order to be ready for the tournament in Nepal. They defeated Thailand’s Division 2 champions Customs United SC and 2-0 with Chathura Gunarathna and Mohamed Sameer on the scoresheet. They lost their second game to a team from Hong Kong 5-1 and followed it up with a 2-1 victory over Thailand U21 side with goals from Mohamed Issadeen and Mohamed Nafeer.
“Our preparation is very good and our players are very fast. The first game is very important against Maldives,” said Roberto.
“Last week we were in Thailand, and we played four games there and we won 3 matches. I hope in this tournament, we can win. We believe in our young players and are learning new pattern (of play),” he added.
He mentioned of having a fair understanding on Maldives and how they play given that the latter had also travelled to Thailand for their preparations ahead of the SAFF Championship.
“When we were in Thailand, Maldives were also there. We have got an idea of Maldives, and we are ready to face them.”
On being questioned on the composition of his side, Roberto said, “We have different characters. You can see how they play in the first match.”
