The former Bahrain coach called for patience as he asked for a buffer period of six months for him to yield positive results with the team...

Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) appointed Mohammed Shamlan Mubarak Basheer Al Shamlan as their head coach after Zavisa Milosavlejvic was sacked following the disappointing 3-0 away defeat to Afghanistan last week.

Shamlan’s salary will be taken care of by the Bahrain Football Federation (BFF) with AFC president Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa playing an important role given his good relations with the PFF. He was the head coach of the Bahrain national side temporarily until Anthony Hudson took over the reins from him earlier this month.

“I thank the PFF for the opportunity. They are now determined to improve the overall status of football in Pakistan,” the Bahraini told The Express Tribune.

Shamlan, who has been handed a two-year contract, stressed that his immediate aim is to understand the composition of his players before drawing expectations on the results.

“With the plan that I have, the results will start to come in six months,” he said. “I don’t have a magic wand that I can use to reshuffle the team right away. As a coach I’ll be different. The team will need to develop the right balance.

Mohammed Shamlan is likely to be sent in an advisory role to Nepal with assistant coach Shehzad Anwar to take charge of the team at the SAFF Championship.

“These players are good, but they need to get rid of the stress. My priority is to establish a good relationship with the players. I want to be friends with them first, on and off the field. Football has both winning and losing. Sometimes even the best of players can’t play because they are under pressure or stress,” said Shamlan.

Pakistan, who have never managed to get past the semi-finals of the South Asian tournament, have arranged for a practice game against the Nepal U-19 team before facing India on September 1.
